Discovering Tibet at Vajra restaurant – One of the most delicious vegetarian restaurants in Saigon

If you have read my previous post about “…hum” vegetarian restaurant, you will definitely remember its meaningful name. Similarly, this restaurant has a quite strange name -“Vajra”. So, what does it mean? Now, let’s continue to discover the mystery.

Vajra – A powerful item in Buddhism

In Buddhist literature, “Vajra”  is usually defined as “diamond” or “adamantine”. In Tibetan ritual, the vajra is used together with a bell. Below is an image of vajra that I just found on the Internet.

The restaurant is located on the second floor of a store which sells only Buddhist products including statues, worshiping items, vegetarian instance foods and etc. In this store, you can see some Buddhist items which belong to Tibetan culture.

Now, let’s discover the restaurant.

Vajra restaurant – Unique interior decorations

On the way to the restaurant, you will see several Buddhist items shaped like a bell. Based on my research on the Internet as well as based on the direction in the restaurant, I know that this item is considered as precious spiritual object and widely used by Buddhists in Nepal. When chanting a mantra “OM MANI PADME HUNG” and turning the item one round, it is believed that you will receive countless Buddhist merits.

The restaurant also has 1 area on the 3rd floor and it only opens in rush days (14th and 15th in every lunar months).

Delicious vegetarian foods

Now, I will show you some dishes that I have enjoyed in my dinner. Honestly, when writing this post, I really want to visit the restaurant and enjoy these dishes again. Now, let’s start with the first dish. Some of you might know that in Vietnamese culture, salad is an appetizer of every meal. Therefore, we ordered a dish of salad and it is called “Noodle salad by Nepal style”. You might think that it should contain some noodles in this. However, there are no noodles in this salad but that’s fine because this dish is still extremely delicious.

My family and I  assumed that the waiter must have  wrongly served this dish to us but we were very happy with this mistake :).

The second dish was “Deep fried vegetarian spring rolls”. If you ask me how this dish was, I just only can say “Awesome”. If I enjoy this dish in another restaurant, I will not know that it is vegetarian food. You must try this dish when visiting the restaurant.

Another wonderful dish is “Fruit spring rolls”. It is served with a very delicious sauce which  is the signature of the food.

Rice is an indispensable food in Vietnamese daily meal and I also ordered it for my family’s dinner. However, instead of  enjoying traditional cuisine, I tried a new style of food, it was “Coconut rice”. This was a wonderful dish with a good smell of coconut and we extremely loved it. You can enjoy this food with soya sauce if you like.

And before leaving, we ordered a “Thai hotpot”. Interestingly, although this is vegetarian hotpot, there is still  seafood in the hotpot. But please keep in mind that the seafood is artificial. The hotpot is served with fresh vegetable and rice noddle.

For beverage, there are some healthy drinks such as red-bean juice and aloe juice. Personally, I prefer to enjoy vegetarian food and natural beverage rather than soft-drinks. However, you can order different types of soft-drinks if you wish to. There is no photo of beverage because I forgot to take it but believe me, they taste very good.

The price of food in Vajra restaurant is quite reasonable. The total bill that I needed to pay for my dinner is about 500,000 VND for 5 people.

How to visit there?

The restaurant address is 711 Le Hong Phong Street, Ward 12, District 10. Interestingly, the restaurant is in front of “Vietnam Quoc Tu” pagoda which is a famous spiritual destination for visitors in Saigon. After visiting the pagoda, you can visit the restaurant to enjoy vegetarian food. It will be one of your meaningful day in Vietnam.

For those who will visit the restaurant from Ben Thanh market, the distance to the restaurant is about 3.5 kilometers and it will take you from 10 to 15 minutes to go there by taxi. Please also notice that the duration might change due to traffic conditions.
