Did you know that if you eat a very spicy chilly, you can get hiccups while your body is trying to adjust to the waves of heat that are flooding it? Sweating and tears rolling down your cheeks are more common symptoms. I never had the hiccups before, now its done, thanks to Saigon Charlie’s chili eating competition! Our good friend Zeus at Zebrafish in Thao Dien D2 hosted the event and Charlie came over to explain interesting facts about chili and hot stuff in general while laying out the rules for the competition which is more like a game (you draw a number and are assigned a chili with a specific grading of “hotness”, “spicyness” or just “badass factor”). Actually, unbeknownst to me at that point, there is a scale called the Scoville scale. This scale is the measurement of the pungency (spicy heat) of chili peppers or other spicy foods as reported in Scoville heat units (SHU), a function of capsaicin concentration. Named after its creator, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville, his method known as as the Scoville Organoleptic Test, was devised in 1912.

I was a bit wary at jumping into the game but the free beer (Lao Beer) for those that ate a chili and endured four minutes without drinking anything was attractive enough to get me in. These are safe chilies in the sense that you won’t have a stroke if you eat one but definitely, enduring four minutes of hotness before drinking any liquid is the funny part. Everyone was laughing and crying at the same time, there is a peculiar high you get, difficult to describe but very enjoyable!
